Dr. Phillips is a small town near Orlando that was founded before the turn of the century. It is named after Philip Phillips, who came to Florida in 1894 to establish himself as a citrus grower. Unfortunately, the worst freezes in Florida’s history occurred in 1895, destroying his trees, and forcing him to go back home to Tennessee.

Undeterred, he returned to Florida seven years later, purchasing land in Osceola County. Over the next years, his holdings expanded to 5,000 acres and two packing plants. He became known for his innovations within the citrus industry and, with his wife, for his philanthropy.

Most of the orange groves in Dr. Phillips have disappeared and what remains is a charming small town. Recently the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts took its place on the roster of Orlando entertainment venues, an impressive soaring building of light and glass.
